Coastal hills of fog, saltpeter and creativity, of stories of Basque whalers, intrepid overseas sailors and txakoli lovers.
This is Getaria, cradle of illustrious people whose creativity and ingenuity opened new paths. From Juan Sebastián Elkano to Cristobal Balenciaga. Innovators, Explorers and Universals. Accurate strokes in navigation charts and haute couture plans.
Getaria, a small coastal port open to the world. Cradle of the primitive culture of txakoli and its current Denomination of Origin.
A silhouette in the sea
A silhouette can be seen over the sea, it is the “xagu” or Getaria’s mouse! A friendly profile immortalized a thousand times that stands like a peninsula. Its body is formed by the Mount of San Antón (which until the 16th century was an island) while its tail is formed by the tombolo (tongue) that joins it to the land. The port is located on the tombolo and the town center on land.
We invite you to get to know Getaria and its people. Here are a few brief outlines. Ongi etorriak! (Welcome)
Creativity from overseas
500 years separate the “getariarras” Juan Sebastián Elcano and Cristobal Balenciaga. But both treasured an infinite talent and creativity to break new ground in their respective fields.
Juan Sebastián Elkano
“Primus circumdedisti me” you were the first to circumnavigate me. So reads the inscription on the coat of arms that Charles V granted to Juan Sebastian Elkano after he completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth in 1522.
A universal landmark. And a consequence of the personal, ingenious and courageous decision taken by Elkano to return from the Moluccas, where they arrived guided by Magellan looking for an alternative route for the exploitation of spices.
Sailing back to the west of the Moluccas was a decision contrary to the main objective. The waters of the Indian Ocean were Portuguese waters. Forbidden. And circumnavigating the land entailed many adversities: they were exhausted, with a ship “Victoria” about to sink, with the Portuguese threat of death and a navigation through unexplored places. But… he made it.
We do not know if Elkano toasted that feat with txakoli, but we do know that there was txakoli, cider and water in the expedition. It was already a custom on the Basque boats that fished in Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada – “Ternua” for the “arrantzales” or sailors. Once a week, on Sundays, they tasted that saline wine, and txakoli was already associated with significant moments!
Cristobal Balenciaga
Cristóbal Balenciaga, son of a sailor and a seamstress, was born in Getaria in 1895 and became the most influential couturier of the twentieth century. Getaria pays tribute to him with a unique museum that displays one of the most important international fashion collections.
His precision, technical skills and perfectionism earned him the admiration of references such as Christian Dior, whom he attributed to be “the master of us all”, Hubert de Givenchy, who referred to him as “the architect of Haute Couture”, and Coco Chanel, who described him as “the only authentic couturier”.
The Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum holds the most relevant collection of the couturier’s creations at international level, both for the number and quality of the pieces as well as for their chronological extension. The scenography is magical, the mannequins faithfully reproduce the bodies for which the costumes were created. It has a collection of more than 1200 garments and accessories designed by the artist.
The museum is located in the upper part of Getaria, in a beautifully designed new building annexed to the Aldamar Palace, forming a unit of striking contrast. The Aldamar Palace was the residence of the Marquises of Casa Torre, grandparents of Queen Fabiola and mentors of the couturier in his early career.
